We are seeking to appoint a Research Officer to join ALNAP. Under the supervision of the Senior Evaluation Research Fellow, the post holder will contribute to designing and delivering innovative, high-quality and policy-relevant research, policy advice and public-affairs initiatives. You will contribute to policy research and advisory projects with a focus on Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Accountability, and engage with humanitarians, M&E practioners and policymakers in research and advisory processes, and disseminate results. This role has both a research and networking function and will also involve planning of international workshops, events, webinars and virtual trainings. The successful candidate would be expected to conduct research within the areas of evaluation, monitoring, evidential quality, information management and organisational learning for humanitarian action while also meeting needs from the ALNAP memberships and coordinating network activities.

Please note: This is an international role. The role does not require the candidate to live in the UK or to relocate to the UK, if successful. The role also does not require the candidate to have an existing right to work in the UK. ODI/ALNAP will seek to facilitate a contract where the successful candidate is based internationally. The Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance in Humanitarian Action (ALNAP) is a system-wide network organisation dedicated to improving the accountability and performance of humanitarian action by strengthening the humanitarian evidence base through sharing lessons, identifying key issues and, where appropriate, providing leadership to find collective approaches and solutions. The Secretariat of the ALNAP network is based in the Overseas Development Institute.. Candidates are advised to familiarise themselves with the ALNAP network at www.alnap.org.

About you
Research Officer

  • A degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent relevant experience in thehumanitarian and/ or development sector or relevant M&E experience .
  • Knowledge of key humanitarian and development institutions and major humanitarian policy issues desirable
  • Knowledge of key monitoring and evaluation policies and practices, including practical experience conducting M&E work (with a strong preference for experience in M&E in a humanitarian response setting)
  • Passionate about improving the performance of humanitarian action
  • Experience in producing research outputs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate successfully and cultural awareness.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken) with fluency in a second language (Arabic, French, Spanish, etc highly desirable)
  • Experience in event planning highly desirable, such as previous experience organising webinars, workshops, trainings, etc
  • Good presentation and networking skills.
  • Multitasking skills.
  • Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Willingness to travel, which may include overnight and weekends on occasion.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.

Senior Research Officer

  • A degree and post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent relevant experience in the humanitarian and/ or development sector or relevant M&E experience .
  • Knowledge of key humanitarian and development institutions and major humanitarian policy issues
  • Strong knowledge of monitoring and evaluation policies and practices, including practical experience conducting M&E work (with a strong preference for experience in M&E in a humanitarian response setting)
  • Passionate about improving the performance of humanitarian action
  • Experience working in a humanitarian response setting and/or lived experience in a developing country
  • Significant experience in an international or regional policy development or research environment, i.e. policy-oriented research and guidance development, demonstrated by publications and reports.
  • Experience in event planning, such as previous experience organising webinars, workshops, trainings, etc
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate successfully with a wide range of people and cultural awareness.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • Strong presentation and networking skills.
  • Multitasking skills.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and fluency in a language other than English (Arabic, French, Spanish, etc) highly desirable
  • Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Heading up a team of editorial, technical and creative professionals, you will oversee the management of ODI’s online channels, including the website and social media, as well as being the guardian of the brand online, championing our values and mission.

About you

Your strategic approach and ability to summarise complex data and messages in an innovative and engaging way will help us to elevate our work to the next level and enable us to have real influence and impact through our digital channels.

Your experience in managing marketing calendars and identifying strategic opportunities for promotion will be essential, as will your strong project management skills and proven ability to manage and prioritise a complex workload.

The specialist would provide advice in the following area of work:

  • Support for the design and implementation of public and advocacy actions and events in the area of climate change, migration, human rights and Corporate Human and Environmental Rights Due Diligence.

  • Structuring, organizing and supervising public actions, meetings and events addressed to engage youths , general public and policy makers at national and international level according to the project priorities.

  • Technical and thematic document and capacity building material design and elaboration.

  • Technical and thematic advice in recruiting external experts/panellists to be involved in the activities.

  • Organisational and logistic support to project thematic experts in the implementation of their activities. - Writing activing reports for each activity and collecting all the supporting document (participant lists, audio and video materials, didactical material etc.) -Advise to Campaign officer and communication experts to communicate events and initiatives - Participate in Internal WeWorld/project staff meetings when required

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Education

University degree in a relevant discipline, e.g., political science, international relations, economics, sociology, law and sustainability development. Master Degree is a plus.

Work history

  • At least three year’s progressive and extensive experience developing and/or managing events, public actions and meetings, especially with the involvement and engagement of young people.

  • Good Knowledge of climate change, migration, human rights.

-Specific knowledge of corporate due diligence in the topic of human and environmental rights.

  • Proved experience in dealing with European Institutions such as Parliament and European Commisison in organizing policy and advocacy events.

  • Proved experience in dealing with European co-funded projects in particular DEAR projects.

  • Proved experience to elaborate documents, policy briefs and capacity building tools.

Languages:

  • Strong communication skills in Italian and in English. Good communication in one of the following languages is an asset: Spanish, Portuguese and French.

Expectations for appointment at the Research Fellow grade

The post of Research Fellow requires substantial research or equivalent experience working on humanitarian MEAL and knowledge management topics, a record of publication and public affairs, and clear evidence of successful development, management and funding of a number of major projects brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

To be appointed as a research fellow candidates should have strong experience managing complex projects and working with stakeholders from across the humanitarian sector. Research fellows are expected to have more in depth knowledge of humanitarian M&E practices and have substantial experience conducting MEAL research and/or managing humanitarian MEAL teams, with considerable experience conducting or leading M&E work in humanitarian settings.

ODI’s Development and Public Finance programme (DPF) supports governments and financing institutions to deliver effective fiscal policies that support equitable and sustainable societies. Through research, analysis and advisory services, the programme focuses on five key outcomes: strengthened macroeconomic stability, efficient and equitable public services, more capable bureaucracies, more effective tax systems, and using public funds to mobilise private capital.

We are looking for an Editor will work with the DPF team to help researchers turn complex written outputs into clear and engaging narratives. This is part of ODI’s commitment to increase the impact of our analysis and research through the delivery of first-class communications.

You will ensure the intellectual rigour and editorial quality of all DPF’s written outputs are maintained. In collaboration with ODI communications colleagues, you will be expected to contribute to increasing the impact and accessibility of research across DPF’s portfolio.

Key responsibilities include:

· Substantive/developmental editing, copyediting and proofreading for DPF written outputs including reports, policy briefs, emerging analysis and blogs.

· Working closely and collegiately with researchers to shape the content of their written work, to make them clear, well-structured and impactful.

· Coordinating the development of publications, working with authors and freelancers to plan and develop outputs from concept note to publication.

· Editing and maintaining the DPF webpages on the ODI website

About you **

We are looking for an entrepreneurial and strategic individual to join ODI as Director of Advisory Services. This is an exciting opportunity to develop, shape and lead ODI’s newly established consulting arm (ODI Global Advisory) providing advisory, convening, policy and research products to clients in, and with an interest in, the geographies where we work.

The Director of Advisory Services will grow and manage ODI’s advisory services and expand into new markets, broadening ODI’s roster of partners and contractors. This role will also be responsible for ODI’s Fellowship Scheme.

The successful candidate will have:

· Substantial experience of working in a for-profit consulting, public policy, and/or advisory organisation in a senior capacity, including influencing policy in national governments, multilateral and bilateral agencies, NGOs and the private sector

· Substantial work experience with multiple partners in global geographies

· Considerable experience of leading and developing business plans and operating procedures

· Proven experience of turning strategy into action

· Client focused orientation and established networks as well as existing relationships with potential funding agencies

· Proven ability to fundraise, build and manage programmes of work

  • A clear commitment to innovation and finding new ways to effectively deliver to new clients.
  • Ability to work with researchers, policymakers and advisors who are not motivated solely by profit maximisation objectives
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills
